I read an article from Yahoo News today about the ever decreasing popularity of the white pages. From a personal standpoint I can’t remember the last time I opened a phone book. I know there isn’t one in my house and if one magically appeared I would recycle it. The article describes Verizon Communication Inc’s request to stop distribution of the white pages because no one uses them anymore! A few states have agreed with this proposal and I hope all do soon.
The article states that removing the white pages from New York State is estimated to save 3,575 tons of paper. TONS! Why? How? What? I don’t understand how this is not some sort of federal law. The telecommunications companies have said that they can provide white pages by printing on request for anyone who doesn’t have access to the internet, a cell phone, or caller id.
In the most general of statistics:
· 1 tree can produce 1,000-2,000 pounds of paper (1 ton = 2,000 pounds)
o With ugly analysis that reads New York just saved 3,575 trees
Let’s get real. Save some trees. White pages are like MySpace- once in time an every day necessity, now distant memories.
